Artist Statement:

One consequence of our language is that we discuss, and therefore think of mental and physical experiences in dualistic terms. This necessary communicative shorthand makes it easy to forget how grounded in the natural, physical world we actually are. What’s exciting to me is the idea of being a body-and-brain, rather than having a body and a brain- that mental experiences are physical (and vice versa).

Through my art, I blur the line between experiences of sensory input (the touch of another, the sun’s warmth, a beautiful piece of music or speech) and mental states (an exciting concept, an emotion), and celebrate the evolutionary gift that is their unity.

Artist Bio:

Derya hails from Houston, Texas, where she went to the High School for Performing and Visual Arts. She got her BA at UT Austin in Linguistics and Philosophy, then came out west to study Psychology at USC. With an MA under her belt, she decided once again to focus on her art. One of her greatest discoveries has been that the division between the arts and the sciences is an illusion, and that the two, in fact, complement each other. This idea permeates her artwork, and today she can be spotted around LA, drawing, making coffee, tending to plants, or romping around in the great outdoors.
